An accountant is a person responsible for the financial transactions of a business. Accountants work in a wide range of job positions, from tax agencies to large corporations. Anyone can be an accountant, but it takes a special type of person to succeed in this career field. You may rise as a leader in the team, but you still need to be able to get along with other people in your work.
Solid Communication Skills
Accountants work with their clients one on one, so they have to be able to communicate with people easily. You will need to be able to talk to both the people that you work with and the people that you work for, so communication skills are key in this job. If you go through a degree program for accounting, you will likely take a few courses in communication to ensure your skills are up to par. The ability to talk to people will take you a long way in this career.
Computer Skills
Accountants use the computer on a daily basis, so you have to be somewhat familiar with technology as a whole. Most accountants utilize multiple programs on the computer to analyze financial data and communicate with clients and employers. With the constant advancements in technology, most accountants must be willing to learn about new computer programs on a regular basis to keep up with the financial management trends of the time. If you are not a fast learner, this may not be the right career for you.
Analytical Skills
Most of an account’s job revolves around analyzing facts and figures to help his or her clients make the right decisions. You will need to be able to interpret information and quickly make a decision as to what you can do to improve the situation. This is one of the most important skills to have as an accountant, but it is something you can learn with guidance from a good degree program. All you need is a few courses in financial analysis to be able to make decisions on the fly.
Persuasion Skills
In the midst of communicating well with your clients and employers, you have to be able to persuade people to follow your financial advice. This may require some sales tactics on your part as you aim to prove that your solution is the ideal option at the time. You will not have to do this as much in a management accountant position as you will in a staff position, but you still need to have the skills to sell someone on your ideas. Hopefully, those ideas lead to success in the end.
Passion
Passion is probably more important than all of the skills above combined. If you do not like your job and the people you help along the way, you will never succeed in this career. You do not have to be obsessed with the career, but you need to show initiative in your work place. That will help you rise in the rankings, and ultimately, it will help you get a better paying position as an accountant.
