Deciding to explore business careers can be a very rewarding move. Most people really do not understand the wide range choices a career in the business world gives people. When you begin your studies you will discover that there are actually several areas of study that you will have do decide on. A great deal will depend on the sector of the business world that you plan to work in. The skills needed to work in banking for instance are far different than the skills needed to work in retail. You might also specialize in business law, becoming a corporate attorney or member of the in-house legal staff or you might be a forensic documents investigator or forensic accountant.
Two of the most basic requirements for any degree in business is a good grounding in both accounting and management. While you do not have to be a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) to begin a career in business all degrees require at least 8 credit hours in accounting. The same rule applies to business management. These are generally lecture courses, rather than the lab courses in accounting, and only give 3 hours per class but you will need at least two semesters of business management.
The very minimum requirement for a serious business career is a Bachelor’s Degree. If you want to specialize in a certain area of business, such as Finance or Human Resources, International Investment or Business Law, you will need to move into Graduate level studies. A Master´s in Public Accounting for instance can get you a job at such high paying and prestigious firms as Touche or Deloitte, or you could enter government service at a supervisory level with great benefits and the chance to do public service. Combining this Master´s with a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance by using an online degree program or even stepping up to an online MBA program, will give you a resume with a much broader scope and increase your marketability.
Another great area to specialize in is the health care industry. Not only do most doctors use business managers when in private practice but a Master´s Degree in Health Care Administration (MHA) will lead to employment at large hospitals, public health administration and the Pharmaceutical industry. Combining an MHA with a Master´s or Bachelor’s in Operations Management will put your name near the top of most executive recruiters list. Business careers then are a wide open field that offers jobs in several sectors of private industry and the public sector as well.
